Sludge Conditioning: Impact of Polymers on Floc Structure
نویسنده
چکیده
In order to enhance mechanical dewatering, conditioning polymers are used to flocculate sewage sludge. These polymers modify floc structure, which has an impact on dewatering efficiency. However, fundamental aspects of those processes are incompletely understood, particularly the way that flocs are structurally organized and how this may relate to their mechanical and dewatering properties. Thus, this study focused on the impact of different types of polymers on sludge rheological and microscopic properties. Polymer dosage was found to be the main parameter controlling these properties and a master curve was obtained between the linear viscoelastic (LVE) complex modulus and polymer dosage, based on optimal polymer concentration. Additional research possibilities were also defined.

Effects of polymer dosage on alum sludge dewatering characteristics and physical properties
The proper use of polymers as conditioners is a critical aspect of dewatering processes. In this study, we investigate their physical properties, i.e. size, density and fractal dimension and correlate them with their dewatering characteristics (bound water content, CST and SRF) on alum sludge with cationic polymer conditioning. Using CST measurement to determine the optimum polymer dose may lea...
متن کاملExploitation of Fenton and Fenton-like reagents as alternative conditioners for alum sludge conditioning.
The use of Fenton's reagent (Fe2+/H2O2) and Fenton-like reagents containing transition metals of Cu(II), Zn(II), Co(II), and Mn(II) for an alum sludge conditioning to improve its dewaterability was investigated. The results obtained were compared with those obtained from conditioning the same alum sludge using cationic and anionic polymers. Experimental results show that Fenton's reagent was th...

On the basis of experiments carried out using an image analysis system and static zone settlement, the alum sludge floc structure and the floc packing status with varied polymer dosages were examined in greater detail to reveal the link with the settling behaviour manifested in the “CML30 method”. The results of image analysis lead to the findings of the floc size with a pattern in initially gr...
متن کاملFreeze-Thaw Conditioning of Activated Sludge: Effect of Monovalent, Divalent, and Trivalent Cations
PHYSICAL, chemical, and biological properties of activated sludge are influenced by changes in ionic strength and ionic composition of sludge. Many studies have investigated the effects of various cations on sludge characteristics [e.g. 1–6] and concluded that cations, particularly divalent cations, play a crucial role in the formation of flocs, influence floc properties such as size, density, ...
متن کاملImpact of Sludge Floc Size and Water Composition on Dewaterability
In order to observe the impact of different water compositions on sludge dewaterability, assessments of floc sizes using a particle size analyzer and of sludge dewaterability based on the capillary suction time (CST) test were carried out. Synthetic raw water had small floc sizes, and synthetic domestic wastewater had both larger median floc sizes and a better correlation between sludge dewater...
